Montreal-based project Hey Gorgeous, led by multidisciplinary artist Peet Massé, presents their debut album International Breakthroughs. The eleven-track record feels intentionally curious, not wanting to be pigeonholed into a single musical category.
One of the most striking tracks here is Rocker on a Club Run, in which alternative rock guitars and house-like rhythms collide. The juxtaposition could easily have felt forced, but it works exceptionally well. The guitars provide real energy and a certain attitude, the electronic elements push the quirky aspect forward, and the whole thing has a slightly chaotic, nocturnal atmosphere. It’s probably the most direct example of why International Breakthroughs is so interesting.
Co-directed by Stephanie-Anne Weber Biron and Peet Massé, the Rocker on a Club Run video follows a fictionalized version of Massé through a surreal 24-hour odyssey across Montreal’s bars, nightclubs, and art galleries. With the participation of friends, collaborators, and members of Montreal’s creative community, the video transforms the song’s themes into a visual exploration of identity, belonging, and artistic convergence.
Nut-Free brings another side of the record, compromising some of the more unfiltered and self-critical writing from Massé. He approaches the song through a clownish persona, using humor and self-deprecation to explore his own flaws.
Unicity Under the Stars and Thunder is also memorable to me, bringing out a darker, traditional side. I love how the track unfolds, with the arrangement letting the songwriting soar and the underlying tone gradually absorbing you.
International Breakthroughs is a bold debut from Hey Gorgeous, all held together by Massé’s desire to make music on his own terms. Rocker on a Club Run may be the easiest entry point, but the full album is where the bigger picture comes together. Check it out below!
