Meet Maya Malkin, a Montreal-born, Toronto-based artist making pop with meaning. She first entered the music scene as part of the band Motel Raphael before pursuing her own artistic path. Her latest release gutpunch, is out now. Inspired by the sinking feeling in your stomach when something brings back memories you haven’t fully processed, the track looks at how the body can react before the mind has made sense of what’s happening. The writing is spot-on, and the lyrics feel all the more powerful because of how relatable they are.
gutpunch sounds wonderful, with its bright, textured production. Malkin’s performance reveals real emotion from the get-go, which makes it powerful.
Fair warning: gutpunch might be difficult to listen to just once. Hit play and see for yourself!
