Danish-Moroccan artist YASMINA KAÏNA writes her songs for therapy and hopes that listeners find comfort or relatability in them. She has been releasing singles since 2022, but BITTERSWEET marks her first EP. It’s definitely worth your time, since it offers such good music.
Explaining the title, YASMINA says: “I called the EP BITTERSWEET because that’s exactly what love tastes like to me. Sweet and bitter at the same time.”
Over six tracks, BITTERSWEET examines the multilayered character of love and the opposing reactions we undergo when letting go of someone we treasure. An intro and outro bookend the project. I consider Barcelona my favorite track here. Inspired by YASMINA’s fascination for the Spanish city, it’s an intimate billet-doux, featuring Rhodes-style piano and sleek electric guitar. Lost In Marbella brings a different vibe with its peppier Afro-pop rhythms and bubbly Spanish guitar, whereas Why strikes a heartbreaking tone. From My Mama might sounds sun-soaked, but it talks about the end of a relationship.
YASMINA’s vocal performances shuffle between strength and vulnerability. She knows that a melody is only half the picture. With her sly, yet creative vocal twists, she makes every line feel significant.
YASMINA is iconic for sure, and I have a feeling she’s just getting started. She’s got the stories and the artistic identity to continue to surprise. Check out BITTERSWEET below!
