Glasgow-based Nigerian singer-songwriter Cecelia Isoghene recently released their debut single, Old Yeller. In it, they look back on losing their old dog at a young age, which still haunts them. Those memories become connected to the person they sing about, bringing their past into the present and showing why the thought of losing someone again feels so painful.
Old Yeller has been arranged interestingly. The upbeat melody gives it an immediate hook, but then Cecelia adds unexpected pauses and tempo changes that keep messing with the rhythm in the best way. I like those little shifts because they give the track a quirky personality and make each section feel slightly different.
Old Yeller is one of the coolest debuts I’ve heard. Check it out below!
