With her stylophone-infused covers, Mari Dangerfield has gained a loyal following on YouTube. She will be releasing her debut album this year. Compass, the project’s fourth single, is a stellar offering. Vocals are richly layered and provide the main focus. The production displays folktronica influences as well as influences from other disciplines. Its classical and theatrical qualities, for instance, greatly add to the charm of the music.
Dangerfield’s tunes are lyrically about personal struggles, particularly mental ones, and being human in the age of technology. She comments on Compass: “It’s about feeling unsure about your feelings about someone and consequently saying and doing things lead them on and hurt them unintentionally.”
