The highly anticipated bilingual debut EP by Italian songbird and producer Alessia Labate has finally been released! With its Timberland-style production, the closing track Superficial reminds me of the 00s. Steady R&B beats and catchy guitars define the soundscape. Alessia’s performance is iconic, her voice suits the song’s style perfectly. When she sings in Italian during the bridge, she adds so much additional depth to the song. Regardless of whether you understand the language, you’ll appreciate it.
Curtis Richardson (Rihanna, JLO, Disciples, David Guetta) co-wrote the lyrics. Superficial tells the story of the emerging artists scene and how hard it is to get yourself to attract the right people and situation.
When speaking about the EP, Alessia says: “You’re My Next Ex was the first song I wrote for the record and it represents my growth in the last 2 years as an artist and as a person. ‘My next ex’ in the song is basically my ego/ the version of myself who gets affected too much by their ego. It’s quirky and fun, just like me and the rest of the EP. The second one I wrote was TRUST!, which was pretty straight forward. Superficial came next: I wrote it while in lockdown with my boyfriend playing guitar next to me and my friend Anne (Tello) on skype from Los Angeles; I knew exactly what I wanted and I kept on fine tuning it until it felt perfect. The last one I wrote was Kiss Is Goodbye with Jon Paul which later turned into the Italian gem Fvck Nostalgia thanks to Beatrice’s amazing lyrical work.”
Alessia places importance on high quality, and her work reflects that. This EP is full of energy, charisma, and character, there’s no question about that. I think Superficial will surprise you the most out of all the tracks. Not only does it sound amazing, but it also has a meaningful context.
