Estella Dawn dazzles us again with her latest cover of a Billy Joel classic, Vienna. She breathes new life into the song with an original funk-filled, eccentric approach. In an ever-evolving industry, a crucial trait artists must have is adaptability, and the element of surprise. While it’s proved very difficult for some, re-working a classic into something fresh and new can really set you apart from the norm. Estella Dawn has no fear, though. She barrels through Vienna with the zeal of an old soul eager to step one foot in the past and one in the present.
Texturally, the cover stands out as a sassy and powerful rendition with loads of character. Estella Dawn has the voice of a thousand suns. There is wit to her runs and an infectious confidence to every line she delivers; and she didn’t even write them! A quirky bass line shapes the piece while an upbeat piano and guitar round Vienna all out. The kicker, though, is Dawn’s sultry yet playful harmonies which urge you to groove; and boy, will we groove to this one.
