When Grace Kay wrote her song Open, she had one specific person in mind: a close friend who was hesitant to try new things. The singer wanted to encourage her to take chances and explore all that life has to offer.
The lyrics of Open are incredibly powerful and brimming with inspiration. For example, take a look at the line, “Take a look at the girl in the mirror / See the glow of the rose reappear and guide you / inside you.” This is a really beautiful metaphor that speaks to the idea of self-acceptance and being true to yourself.
The song’s sound is really unique—it’s kind of ethereal and otherworldly. And that’s intentional, because Kay and her producer Austin Foley wanted to create a really immersive experience for listeners.
With lush pads and syncopated percussion, Open instantly draws your attention. But it doesn’t end there. After fleshing out the bulk of the production, Kay and Foley recruited Tre Ulseth to add finishing touches of guitar throughout – most notably during the climactic final swells of the song. This was a great decision, and it helps to give Open an epic feel.
