When Siv Jakobsen sat down to pen Tangerine, she took the perspective of someone who feels helpless, disposable and worthless. She imagines this person trapped in a house, needing help and not being able to ask, then locking eyes with a neighbor and silently asking for help they’ll never get.
The lyrics are heavily influenced by Japanese author Haruki Murakami. Jakobsen. He’s known for his surreal stories that explore the inner lives of his characters.
What I love about Murakami’s writing is that it’s so dreamlike and mysterious. It’s like he’s peeling back the layers of his characters’ psyches and revealing their hidden desires and fears. In Tangerine, we see the same thing.
The song has a chill Indie Folk vibe. Soft electronics and hushed acoustic guitars dominate the production and hook you from the get-go. Siv’s vocals are wonderful, conveying a lot of emotion.
