Bel Kil started writing My Year just before covid hit. Quite a few people close to her were going through breakups and she could totally relate to those feelings of utter devastation and emptiness – as though you’re never going to get past it and feel whole again.
It’s a really dark place to be in, but as the saying goes, look at things not as they are, but as they can be. And that’s what Bel wants listeners to learn from the song.
My Year has both electronic and organic elements, which I really like. It’s not like some of the other pop songs out there that are overproduced to the point where they become monotonous.
Bel’s vocals are highly precise, no doubt. But it’s the way she uses them to convey emotion that really makes them stand out. There’s a conviction and raw power in her voice that comes through in every note, and it’s this that you will remember for a lifetime.
