Tonia (pronounced Toe-knee-uh) grew up in a musical family of pianists, opera singers, pop-lovers, and rock fans. Her single, Sweet Relief, from her EP, Afloat, may be quiet, but has such beautiful instrumentation. I like the way the guitar adds melody to the production and ebbs and flows throughout, for example. You’ll feel like you’re somewhere where the sun rules while listening. Tonia has a fabulous voice and sings so well.
Sweet Relief was written with Tonia’s best friend Amelia Wallace on Zoom and pieced together by long time collaborator Bob Mackenzie (Real World Studios). The song speaks about falling in love and the waves of different emotions it brings. Love can be complicated, and writing this song allowed Tonia to let go. She found clarity and overcame barriers caused by past relationships through it.
