The initial inspiration of Marissa Burwell’s Coward came during a tearful phone call when she realized she wasn’t being honest with herself. At the time, it was just a written statement, but it led to deep reflection on the origin of her desire to play it safe.
The instrumentation provides a canvas for Burwell’s powerful vocals. Synth melodies glisten and shimmer, reminiscent of blinking stars. An upbeat drum beat and electric guitar ground the sound with an indie pop-rock feel. Together, the sonic elements convey the same emotion as the lyrics.
