There’s a kind of magic that happens when creative souls are limited in their space. Isolation stimulates inspiration, as they say, and for Canadian six-piece Beams, the lockdown prompted a burst of ideas that culminated in The Spark in Your Eye.
Recorded live with producer Kevin McMahon, the collection presents a hypnotic soundscape of glinting guitars, levitating vibraphones, warm purring amps, and ghostly violin strains. Lyrically, the songs are honest, reflecting on personal experiences.
Morning Waits opens the EP, gaining interest right away. It blooms beautifully with intricate melodies. The second track, I See A Spark, has a lighter sound, fresh and summery. It’s especially the vocals that are amazing here. Take Back Ten‘s production is quirky and interesting, and there are a lot of cool moments to be found.
Like a candle being kindled in the darkness, this music ignites a light in the listener, leaving them enthralled with wonder. Though born of confinement, The Spark in Your Eye ultimately frees us, showcasing the possibilities that lie ahead. It’s fair to call Beams industry-leading, because they are. What they do next is for now only a question. Hopefully soon we’ll know more.
