Earlier this year, Janet Devlin soared to No. 4 in the iTunes Country Charts with Country Singer. Its lyrics revolve around her who is fed up with the stereotypical ‘country singer’ persona portrayed in country songs. The song speaks of a man who claims to be a born-again, godly person but is actually more aligned with the Devil’s antics, embodying the clichés of trucks, beer, and football.
You could say that the song promotes principles of empowerment, self-respect, and a refusal to be swayed by the allure of a stereotypical country singer figure who embodies toxic masculinity and outdated gender dynamics.
Country Singer has authentic instrumentation, it swings hard. The vocals are raw, which makes them perhaps not refined, but truly honest and direct. It’s easy to appreciate them. The chorus is catchy as can be.
Devlin connects the dots here. She should should be praised loudly. Check out Country Singer below!
