Finnish alternative pop artist PALMU has released her newest single Ringtone. The track’s lyrics draw a comparison between short-lived human connections and the ephemeral nature of a mobile phone ringtone – something that momentarily demands your attention before fading back into the ambient noise. There’s an overarching theme of temporariness implied within the song’s narrative, reflecting on the ways in which modern communication often prioritizes speed over substance.
Sonically, Ringtone presents an upbeat melodic sound belied by an underlying wistfulness. Its catchy rhythms and textures risk glossing over the song’s introspective core, but they avoid doing that and stay in their own bubble. PALMU’s performance brings vulnerability to the forefront, enabling us to see the truth about how today’s (online) society works.
