Shannon Chapman is a multifaceted neo-soul artist and producer. She releases Playing Games, the title (and final) track of her second EP. This mellow, nostalgic gem really hits the sweet spot with its bouncy chord progressions, glimmering flute melodies, and that playful bassline grooving underneath.
But beyond the chill, laid-back vibe of the instrumentation, the lyrics reveal a deeper introspection from Shannon. She gets candid about the mixed messages she’s received her whole life – constantly being told she’s either “too bold” or “too tentative”, never quite fitting the mold. You can hear the exasperation in her voice as she sings about having to put on a metaphorical mask every day to conform to others’ expectations.
Ultimately though, the song takes an uplifting turn as Shannon seems to find peace in simply being herself. No more games, no more masks – just a refreshing acceptance of her true nature, quirks and all. It’s an understandable sentiment that adds extra resonance to the breezy soundscape.
