Singer/songwriter Samantha Gongol recently launched her new single Planes Are Low, and trust me, it’s so heartfelt. The indie pop track is dripping with melancholy, featuring Gongol’s raw, soulful vocals layered over soft piano chords. It all clicks into context like a puzzle.
The genesis of Planes Are Low can be traced back to a fateful walk Gongol took during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. As she strolled through the unseasonably warm winter air, the thick atmosphere felt oppressive, mirroring the heaviness weighing on her mind.
Just before she was about to turn back, a plane suddenly dipped beneath the clouds. Its low altitude startled Gongol. “It seemed almost as if it was flying dangerously low,” she recalls. In that moment, she perceived it as a powerful metaphor for her feelings – everything seemed out of place.
From that visceral experience, the seeds of Planes Are Low took root. Gongol channeled her innermost feelings into the lyrics, painting an accurate picture of the emotional turmoil and state of disorientation she grappled with.
