Montreal-based musician and producer MEGGO releases sylvia’s place ;; tricks as the lead single off her debut EP. It was written after her dog, Laika, died. They shared a special bond, and she misses her so much. How sad! It must have been an incredibly sweet pet.
The track consists of sounds from a goodbye party MEGGO threw for her, with friends laughing and crying and jamming, sometimes all at once, with Laika eating spaghetti smothered in bacon fat and looking content.
That real visual is the heart of sylvia’s place ;; tricks, and the EP as a whole – it’s about being present enough to notice fleeting moments, about holding sadness and joy in the same breath.
Musically, MEGGO keeps it fairly subdued and abstract, but it definitely works. I especially like the second part, when the drums softly push the sound. The vocals are deeply emotional from start to finish.
