Visionary artist Laila Smith shares Diorama, a powerful new single from her upcoming EP that looks deep into personal trauma while confronting broader themes of sexual violence and the societal power structures that influence our most intimate experiences.
Diorama opens with a few moments of silence, building anticipation, before a delicate plucked acoustic guitar line begins to weave its way through the track. The melody starts off sunny and light, almost saccharine in its sweetness. However, as the lyrics unfold, there’s an emotional tension that contrasts sharply with the cheerful sound, particularly with lines like, “And if I can’t be your favorite, I’ll learn to be less important. I’m just a figurine.”
