Rising indie-rock talent Mary Middlefield releases her new single, Wake Up!. She talks about how “self-loathing can rot into something loud, ugly, and confrontational, especially when you project it outward.
Featuring thunderous drums, jagged guitars, and vocals that refuse to soften anything, Wake Up! sounds exactly like its emotional content. It matches the ugliness with ugliness, the confrontation with confrontation.
The visual component amplifies everything the song is doing. Mary barefoot and splayed across the floor, moving erratically in front of multiple mirrors. You’re watching someone someone observing their own unraveling on an old TV screen like they’re simultaneously experiencing it and watching from outside themselves.
