Jared Samuel handed Nic Panken a pair of scissors and told him to cut up his own song.
Every line, separated. Shuffled on a table like a deck of cards. Then reassembled, differently, strangely, better. A few new threads woven in to hold it together, and what had arrived as a throwaway sketch at the tail end of a recording session became something Panken couldn’t have planned his way to.
Dear Companion sounds like none of this happened. It’s inevitable, warm and slightly mysterious, with Panken’s vocals moving through it fluidly. He kills it throughout.
