After a few years away from releasing new music, independent artist Mia Kai found her way back to the studio last September, spurred on by a growing performance schedule and a residency that made the return feel real. In contrast to going back to her usual territory (90s R&B, power ballads) she wanted to get her hands into something different. Something a little more personal, a little more obscure. That turned out to be a Feist track, My Moon My Man, that always spoke to her.
Then, in one of those only-in-music moments, she’s finishing the thing up and the song suddenly explodes back into the cultural conversation thanks to a prominent feature in Heated Rivalry. Serendipitous is one word for it.
Mia’s version takes its own direction, which is exactly what makes it worth hearing. Mia Kai brings her own flair to it.
My Moon My Man is out now, and if the playlists catch up to it, they’ll be better for it.
