HOLYSEA’s new single, The Net, arrived as prophecy before it arrived as music, written ahead of a period of personal upheaval that would see her displaced from her home with her husband and young baby after lead contamination forced them out. She recorded it in that instability, in the middle of the very turmoil the song seemed to have anticipated.
The release was timed to the lunar new year, the transition from the year of the wood snake into the fire horse. That’s not incidental. This transitional moment (and the year + to come) calls for bravery and commitment to our highest path. That often comes with a cost–all of the things which we’re comfortable with and that have the potential to dim or block light.
What elevates the song beyond its personal origins is that the turmoil it captures isn’t only HOLYSEA’s. The upheaval she experienced privately mirrors a larger, collective uncertainty.
The Net is for everyone who needs it, and right now, that’s most of us.
