Tom Woodward’s got seven albums under his belt now, which feels like the kind of milestone where you’ve earned the right to do whatever the hell you want. And on Come Come Karma!!!, dropped January 28th, that’s pretty much what he does.

If you’re into The Felice Brothers’ ramshackle charisma, Dylan’s wordplay, or The War On Drugs’ atmospheric sprawl, Woodward’s working in that same sandbox, but he’s built his own castle there. Years of grinding through the National Folk Festival, the Multicultural Fringe Festival, and opening for the likes of The Drones and Abbe May have clearly left their fingerprints. You can hear it in the way these songs flow, and in how they document the messy, honest bits of being alive.

Phoney Messiah, the lead single that surfaced back in November, gives you the blueprint. It’s genuine folk-rock that wins you over without trying too hard. Things are just sounding good. Then you have Jack and Jill,. In place of focusing on loudness, Woodward simply tells the story of Jack and Jill (which should come as no surprise).

Woe is Me shows just how active Woodward’s imagination is. It throws indie rock into a blender with some broken baroque romanticism that shouldn’t work together but absolutely does. His vocals are absolutely killer here as well.

And those song titles? With names like Sails In Your Heart and Dancing On A Carousel, Woodward shows a sharp instinct for language.

Seven albums in, Woodward’s not giving off any signs of creative drought. Come Come Karma!!! makes it clear he’s still got plenty to say. Stream it now and see what all the fuss is about.
