SISTRA, a sister-duo from Hackney, London, who are co-dependent, largely housebound, and write music for and about each other, have announced their debut album, Is It Just Me?, and it arrives as a statement of intent. Is It Just Me? takes one sister’s creeping loneliness and blows it up into something enormous. Maximalist alternative dance-pop, all sharp edges and euphoric pressure, nodding to the otherworldly sonics of Oklou and the theatrical ambition of Caroline Polachek. It shouldn’t feel this good to feel this alone. And yet.
That contradiction lies at the heart of the matter. The maximalism isn’t decoration, it’s the emotional truth of the thing. Loneliness inside codependency doesn’t look like silence and empty rooms. It looks like two people completely consumed by each other, the outside world slowly becoming unreal, and the question of whether anyone else even exists anymore creeping in at the edges.
