You know the feeling when someone gives you just enough to keep you around but not enough to actually call it something? Yeah. Nelleke knows it too, and she wrote a banger about it. Toothbrush is the type of indie pop-folk track that makes you laugh, cringe, and feel deeply seen all at once.
The verses are chef’s kiss in their honesty. While reflecting on this wishy-washy almost-relationship, Nelleke is scrolling through dog videos and rewatching Lost. Because honestly? That’s a better use of time. The self-awareness is hilarious and sort of perfect.
Musically, Toothbrush mixes the atmospheric depth of The War on Drugs and Sharon Van Etten with a playful indie pop approach reminiscent of Clairo. Overall, I think it’s iconic.
