Rising indie-pop artist Lila Holler takes a bold and emotionally vulnerable step forward with her newest single, Monster. It’s fundamentally a comparison confrontation. Written during a period when Holler found herself painfully dependent on male validation to define her self-worth, the song unpacks the exhaustion of being sexualized and the internal conflict that follows. “This song came to me at a point in my life where I felt very shamefully reliant on male validation to dictate my self worth,” Holler shares. “I felt as though I was stuck using sexuality as a way to preform— to emulate someone that I am not in an attempt to feel desirable or sexy as a woman. That performance bred jealousy,” she continues, “and it brought me to a dark headspace for quite some time.”

From a musical standpoint, Monster is a significant milestone. Departing from her traditional indie-pop sound, Holler embraces heavier textures and stronger vocal delivery, which helps the meaning of the song to fully land.
