Here’s the thing about For Good. It was already perfect. The voices, the orchestration, and the intimacy between two people singing about the ways they changed one another’s lives. Taking something like that and stripping it back to a single piano is either very brave or very foolish. Matt Johnson, it turns out, is very brave.
His solo piano interpretation of the Wicked centrepiece doesn’t try to replace the existing piece. It simply asks a different question: what remains when everything is removed? The answer is everything that matters. The melodic lines stay faithful and reverent, the emotional core remains completely intact, and yet through the kind of dynamic sensitivity that can’t be taught, Johnson makes For Good feel irrefutably his own.
