The Enigmatic Foe is the musical project of Knoxville-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jared Colinger. His long-awaited new album, Like An Ocean, could go down in history as one of the creative albums of the 2020s. I’m most impressed by its thematic depth. Jared sings about disconnection, longing, mental health issues, loss, and the fragility of hope. And he does all of this in a way that hits home. Honestly, most of what is said is very relatable.
On the music front, things are top-notch too. I enjoy the guitar melodies on Something’s Wrong, the strings on My Decline, and the sax on Algorithm. Vocally, I can already tell you that your attention will be captured. Jared delivers with complete emotion. And that’s the case throughout the entire album.
Jared didn’t take the easy road; he really created a record different from what you generally hear. Music for the connoisseur is a fitting description, I think. Like An Ocean has no dips. Each track stands strong on its own, and together they move as one. Absolutely next level. What more do I need to say?
Check out Like An Ocean below. And really sit down to take it in. It’s worth it, you’ll see.
