Starling’s new single Cupcake was written on her birthday, a day that historically arrived with shame, self-criticism, and the feeling of feeling behind on a timeline nobody else set. This time, instead of spiraling, she rewrote the narrative in real time.
Cupcake talks about choosing kindness over criticism at the exact moment when self-destruction would have been easier.
The production is clean and minimal in places, but layered with unusual, playful sounds that make it somehow unpredictable. Vocals are intimate and close, almost conversational, full of emotion without coming across as corny.
