KiNG MALA is the moniker of Areli Castro, an alternative soul artist born in El Paso and based in Los Angeles. I STILL KNOW YOU, from her release And You Who Drowned in the Grief of a Golden Thing (The Director’s Cut), really hits home. It deals with the lingering weight of intimacy after love has shifted; suddenly, everything in your mind feels different. The other person seems almost like a stranger, no longer someone who truly loves you. You simply don’t recognize them anymore.
I love the production here; it has a pop sound but also a touch of the Western genre. With elements like bubbly synths and gritty guitar, things are iconic. The vocals sound stunning, meeting expectations.
