Recently, singer-songwriter Adjenai released Early Mourning. The song, written on a couch in Brandon, Florida, began as a way for her to process the overwhelming experience of watching someone slowly waste away from dementia. Instead of reducing grief to something purely destructive, the song finds beauty in the contradictions: the heartbreaking lyrics are combined with a 2000s pop aesthetic, full of sultry vocals, catchy melodies, dreamy textures, and subdued indie-rock guitars.
It’s beautiful how Adjenai can express such personal feelings and package them into something accessible. Early Mourning deserves all the attention it can get. It’s one of those songs that aims to be more than just a song, becoming an anchor to hold onto when things get tough.
