Meet endive, a Dutch quartet bringing together four musicians (Marcel Ju, Warner Mossel, Sam van Tienhoven, and Andro Ackerman) from Leiden, Rotterdam, and The Hague. They make music that stems from piano improvisation, with little in common with the mainstream and a clear link to the underground. Their distinctive style finds a home on their debut EP headprint. I can already reveal that it’s iconic.

etretat opens the EP. Sensitive piano sets the atmosphere and brings you closer to a portal of light. Bass guitar and drums quickly join in, providing good additional support for the vocals. Synths and electric guitar soon complete the arrangement. This foundation of elements flows through to the other songs, but it never becomes repetitive. The sound already takes a deeper turn on the second track, to unfold, woven with a sharp melancholy. changing of days has an enchanting effect on the soul. The drums, in particular, go for it here. nightfall moves confidently within its minimalism, pushing artistic boundaries. Its outro especially moved me. And that’s for real. nothing left to say incorporates an energy that first flies to Mars, then falls back to Earth. It’s mysterious, yet remains surprisingly accessible. reflection brings a kind of ending that isn’t really an ending, more like a springboard for what’s next.

Across the EP, the songs explore themes of longing, love, coming of age, self-discovery, self-destruction and identity, often playing out somewhere between dreams and reality. As an alternative to following a direct narrative, the lyrics make use of recurring imagery and shifting emotional states. This approach permits the EP to move more liberally, without too many rules, making it feel genuinely immersive.

I can only recommend you listen to headprint. It has everything you wouldn’t necessarily expect, and that’s exactly what makes it work so well. It’s something different for a change. I think the EP must sound cool live as well.

I’m certainly curious to see what else the guys from endive will bring in the future. For now, though, it’s best to celebrate the present by appreciating and sharing headprint.
