Jon-Olov Woxlin is a true storyteller and makes music with passion. We see this reflected on his 11th, yet still innovative LP, The Mountains of My Home. In every way, this is fantastic, and I mean that in the strongest possible terms.
Throughout the record, there are numerous highlights. One of them is I Can’t Go On Loving You, which centers on a breakup and features some really cool guitar movement. Resurrection of Hebe marks another track I can listen to endlessly, with lyrics that look back on the past while keeping an eye on the future. The Man I’m Pretending to Be stands out for its deeply personal form of self-reflection. It shows just how deep Woxlin’s lyricism can go. They’re Marching to the City brings the album to a close via moving storytelling and one of the most beautiful melodies ever.
Although Woxlin doesn’t necessarily see himself as a singer, I do find his vocals very sharp here. He knows how to use expression wisely and to his advantage. It’s precisely that rawness that works well for him, because the songs thrive on authenticity rather than excessive polish.
The Mountains of My Home works as a whole, providing a beautiful and rewarding journey. Woxlin’s evolution is something you could easily write a whole book about.
There’s only one thing left for me to do, and that’s to say: Check out the record now and really take the time to let it sink in.
