Edmonton-based singer-songwriter and visual artist Garett Gunderson celebrates love in all its forms on his second album, Anywhere Anytime. In nine songs, he explores everything ranging from new romantic thrills to the comfort that long-lasting commitments bring. The album adopts a positive approach, placing emphasis on enjoying small moments together.
Anywhere Anytime doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it certainly gives it a fresh coat of paint and a set of chrome rims. The title track sets off with bright melodies and a retro-rock attitude, after which I Want To turns back the clock to the 60s through cheeky verses and shiny guitars. In The Sunlight could have come straight out of a classic pop-rock jukebox, which makes it all the more enjoyable. Miss Dynamite swaps sunshine for something rougher, driven by punchy percussion and cutting riffs. Something So Right offers a delightful distraction with its funky rhythm.
The album features an all-star lineup of musicians, including Kirkwood (guitar, keyboard, bass, drums), Bob Tildesley (trumpet), Allison Ochoa (baritone sax), Rob Shapiro (organ), Tim Cotton and Stephanie Suchy (harmony vocals), and the Itunu Choir. They all contribute to the success of the project.
Gunderson’s vocals have an unforced sincerity that keeps everything feeling close to the heart, even when the arrangements become more flamboyant. His background as a visual artist shines through in the music, with the songs being defined by their own colours, textures, and emotions.
Anywhere Anytime is an album you easily return to when you are in need of something uplifting. Listen below!
