Songwriter/producer Raia Was creates R&B-influenced art pop that is dark, lustrous and contemplative. Having grown up in the New York music scene, Raia Was is a mainstay within the DIY community, performing at Rough Trade, Baby’s All Right, and Le Poisson Rouge to name a few.
Her latest single, the title track off Side B, Angel I’m Frightened was a feature of her live shows, summoning a clear invocation for her emotionally intense and often fast cutting set (with which she was invited to open for both IDER and Taylor McFerrin).
The song sounds so good. I like the brilliant piano work. Besides, the hooks are memorable. Furthermore, I’m also a fan of the delicate vocals.
Lyrically, Raia delivers. Her writing style is impressive.
The artist has made a record that illustrates the edges of her identity, testing what it’s like to be in the far corners of her mind. With this title track we finally feel the affects her mind has had on her body – “ sounds that make me up, lies that wake me .” – The result is her most visceral track yet and perhaps also a rare moment of closure on a record that tends to leave questions unanswered.
Raia’s music speaks for itself. She makes real art.
The single releases off Side B have been her fastest growing yet, landing her a feature on Spotify’s Fresh Finds and playlist adds exposing her to hundreds of thousands of new fans.
