San Francisco singer-songwriter Brad Wolfe, who performs under the name Brad Wolfe & The Moon, releases Vol.1: Loss, the first part of his three-part project Loss, Life & Love Mixtapes. The EP, on which he has worked for over ten years, explores grief in all its forms, from the loss of loved ones to the end of a relationship. What makes the project so personal is that Wolfe draws on real experiences, including the death of his childhood sweetheart Sara from cancer and the stories of his grandparents, who survived the Holocaust. These experiences form the basis for a collection of songs about confronting pain and finding meaning in life that goes on.
Vol.1: Loss pairs the gentle pull of folk and Americana with indie touches, providing a sound that’s actually quite distinctive. Sara’s Got a Sunbeam is the moment that hits hardest, a tribute to Sara and the music Wolfe brought into her hospital room. Why Wait celebrates his grandparents’ determination to make a joyful life after suffering that could easily have defined them. Cover You in Flowers finds tenderness in the face of mortality, treating love as something worth holding close for as long as possible. Champagne Dreams offers a charming change of pace that gives heartbreak a playful musical twist. Too Far Gone and Driftwood add further shades to the collection, expanding its emotional range.
With Vol.1: Loss, Wolfe keeps things focused on what matters most: the songs. His beautiful writing and the consistently strong production make this EP one of the best of the year. Check it out below!
