Veya is the artistic project of Netherlands-based multi-instrumentalist Eva Scheltema. She has shown the world what she’s capable of before, but with her debut EP, Silence in the Storm, she takes things a step further. The project offers so much that you could almost write a book about it. By the time it ends, you’ll understand why Veya should be on your radar.
Silence in the Storm stirs up the art-pop aesthetics of AURORA, Hozier and Maggie Rogers. Classical influences contribute further complexity to the sound, particularly through the prominent use of organic strings. These arrangements sit splendidly alongside smooth rhythms, genial acoustic textures, and subtle electronic flourishes.
The EP follows the feeling of being entangled in the rush of day-to-day life, trying to make sense of everything happening around you. At some point, the noise simply becomes too much, and the need comes to bow out and take a deep breath.
The project consists only of highlights. I think Bite my Tongue is special, for example. The song examines the struggle to remain silent and conforming to societal expectations, even when frustration mounts and you actually want to make your voice heard. Musically, it impresses, with the bass guitar being so solid.
Another track I really admire is Written, which emphasizes that you have to shield yourself, let go of the pressure to blend in, and gain control of your own life. It’s especially compelling when the chorus begins.
The closing track, All I Can, stands out as well. The lyrics discuss the struggle to stay faithful to someone when life and your own feelings seem to be driving you apart. The combination of violin, guitar, and double bass works excellently.
Silence in the Storm stands tall alongside other brilliant recent releases. It also serves as a good stepping stone to more, so I’m looking forward to seeing how Veya continues to develop. But one thing is certain: Silence in the Storm deserves a prominent place in the spotlight. So give it some attention today by listening to it.
