Don’t Wanna Be Your Girl by rising star Bri Scully delivers a thoughtful, but lighthearted take on the all-too-common “situationship.” She penned this song while navigating those murky waters herself.
The lyrics speak of objectifying yourself almost preemptively (“feed me lies like candy”) to avoid the sting of being objectified by another. It’s a self-deprecating defense mechanism that’s relatable. Underneath the catchy production lies a melancholy acknowledgement of longing for real intimacy and commitment, despite pretending to be fulfilled by casual flings.
You can definitely hear the influences of classic ’80s acts coming through in the musical arrangement. On top of that solid foundation, the vocals are also phenomenal. Scully has a textured, melodic tone that follows the beat well and really makes the lyrics sparkle.
