Alison Tucker’s debut album, Where You Used to Be, is a stunning, vulnerable collection that heralds the arrival of a bold, contemporary voice in folk and country. Featuring eight original songs, it explores themes of heartbreak, resilience, identity, and redemption, rooted in poetic grace and genuine emotion.

The opening track, New Lover, embraces aching sensitivity, capturing the tension that arises when thinking about someone’s new lover. Its mellow pace pulls you into the realm of introspection. When You Close Your Eyes follows with a nostalgic, melancholic intimacy that showcases Tucker’s talent for crafting melodies around deep feelings.

Filling Up the Spaces and More Time emerge about halfway through the album, revealing remarkably precise wordplay. Whether focusing on the unsaid or past moments, both are tender and unwavering. Three Quarter Time provides a bittersweet shift, one that moves through longing.

Let Me Go features Tucker’s guitar work and vocal control, showing off her searing desire to be free. But it’s Long Sleeves that leaves the biggest mark. Tackling the trauma of domestic abuse carefully, the song is therapeutic. It’s a brave, necessary inclusion that speaks volumes.

The album ends with Carousel of Colors. This one the excitement of a carnival to the unpredictability and beauty of life. You need to hear it.

Where You Used to Be is a rebirth as much as a debut. Tucker tells stories worth listening to, and she’s just getting started. Check out the project below!
