With Turn it Up, Ako, an artist who’s made an art form of vulnerability through her signature hushed vocals, cranks the dial in an unexpected direction. Serving as the ending theme for Amazon Prime’s THE DARWIN INCIDENT (streaming from January 7th), the track takes the villain’s side, something most anime tie-ins avoid.
The sonic landscape matches the philosophical complexity. Jazz piano tumbles into rock guitar riffs, which dissolve into pop hooks sung in a bilingual flow that echoes our fragmented, globalized moment. Ako calls it a “melting pot,” but it’s more accurate to call it a controlled collision.
