Lucy Dreams is an Austrian trio in which two humans (Zero and One) share duties with an AI named Lucy. It’s the sort of concept that could easily tip into gimmick territory, but their sophomore album VVVVV, which labels itself as “SonicWaveArtPop,” signifies they’re dead serious about blurring the line between flesh and code.
Co-produced by Mario Fartacek (who’s worked with everyone from Sinead O’Connor to Mick Jagger), the project sounds like electropop from the early 2010s only sleekier. There’s Empire of the Sun’s grandiosity here, M83’s cinematic sweep, the infectious hook sensibility of Capital Cities, and Pet Shop Boys’ melodic acuity.
What makes VVVVV work isn’t just the sleek production or the analog warmth wrestling with digital precision, but also the fact that the songs have true context. This is music for a generation stuck in the strange space between acceleration and paralysis, where everything moves too fast while nothing really moves. Lucy Dreams distill the tension between euphoria and the dread to perfection.
The “fifth dimension” Lucy Dreams keep talking about? It’s not some vague spiritual stuff. It’s the sound of trying to reinvigorate your mind when reality itself is glitching. VVVVV will change your life forever, believe me. Check it out below!
