Singer-songewriter Leah Nawy releases her new single, Quicksand. It’s framed as a conversation between Nawy’s present self and her childhood self, and that framing does something genuinely affecting. It’s not nostalgia exactly, it’s more like hindsight with feelings. The refrain “run little girl” lands somewhere between a warning and a wish, the kind of thing you can only say looking backwards.
Entirely arranged and self-produced by Nawy over two years, the track features both live and electronic instrumentation. It opens with a pulsing electronic bass. Then the chorus arrives and everything cracks open. Dense indie-rock guitars, twinkling pads, vocals pushed right to the front and daring you to look away. And then just as you’ve surrendered to it, it dissolves. The a cappella outro strips away everything.
Nawy continues to make music that resonates with the heart. Check out Quicksand below!
