Joya Mooi’s latest release, Only Water, draws inspiration from Olympic diver Greg Louganis, who found refuge in water during a time when HIV stigma made the rest of the world feel hostile. It’s an intriguing starting point, and the Edison-nominated Dutch-South African artist runs with it beautifully, enlisting Nigerian artist Lady Donli to bring the vision to life.
The outcome is fluid, warm R&B anchored by soft bass, subtle keys, and harmonies that fold into each other. The production doesn’t rush anywhere; it’s immersive and contemplative.
With support from NPO, KEXP, KCRW, and Billboard Africa, Joya Mooi has long been making music that travels. This one feels especially resonant. Start listening below!
