Every performance ends. The lights go down, the crowd clears out, and somewhere behind all of it there’s a door that only opens for one person.
That’s the world ANJXLXE inhabits on Backstage, her first release of the year and one of the most delicate R&B records you’ll hear for a while. The Montreal singer-songwriter talks about two musicians in love, constantly moving, constantly visible, constantly on, and the sacred space they carve out for each other when none of that applies anymore.
The production is exactly what the song needs. Co-written with Tony Stone of Planet Giza and produced by Da-P alongside KOLA, whose talkbox adds a warm, nostalgic glow to the whole thing, Backstage is silky and slow-burning and built entirely for closeness.
ANJXLXE’s voice glides over all of it like she has nowhere else to be. Which, for four and a half minutes, she doesn’t.
