Funkwrench Blues has always been a project defined by reinvention. Founded in Boston by Frank Swart, who made music history by recording the first Pixies demos, the ensemble has since evolved into something far broader and more collaborative, a community-oriented approach to sonic experimentation infused into everything they touch. On THIS IS THE ONE! (raison d’être), co-produced by Brian Brinkerhoff, this philosophy is fully realized. It features a rotating roster of accomplished musicians including vibraphonist Warren Wolf, percussionist Hamid Drake, pianist Nduduzo Makhathini, guitarist David Fiuczynski, drummer Ronald Bruner Jr, and more. Expect nothing less than the best.
The album, spread across impressive eight tracks, bounces through swinging funk grooves and rock-like excursions, via a subdued jazz interaction and the subtle, atmospheric surprise of Lullaby (Manic Impressions) before Precious and Impermanent closes the whole with casual elegance. The track order is well planned and the execution consistently excellent, with the ensemble following its instincts across a variety of genres without losing sight of the common thread. You’ll love it for sure.
Funkwrench Blues have long since established their credentials, yet they continue to push themselves creatively. They have nothing left to prove, but they keep proving it anyway. THIS IS THE ONE! (raison d’être) makes the case definitively.
