Sophie van Hasselt is a Dutch indie-pop singer-songwriter. Her new single, Paper Bits, harks back to the 90s in terms of production, yet still manages to come across as refreshing. The vocals are soft, which only works to their advantage.
The song originated outside a restaurant on the corner of Sophie’s street. Every evening she saw people smoking and throwing their cigarettes on the ground, creating a big pile. Time and again, she wanted to say something, but fear always stopped her. Fear of being laughed at, of causing a scene, or of being seen as strange. Eventually, she realized she didn’t want that fear to keep controlling her. So she made a promise to herself: whenever she noticed something like this, she would speak up, just once a day, to just one person. It was a small step, but it was a start.
