Lefuturewave is a music blog based in the Netherlands. We feature emerging as well as established artists.
Many albums are made in fairly normal ways, but Lynn Hollyfield’s Diving In has a more unique background. The process began during a chance encounter at a songwriting retreat and soon grew into an unusual creative adventure. Eleven songs were recorded inside a historic New England church turned studio in West Springfield. While it was snowing outside, it was warm inside thanks to what was being created. The space contained not only Hollyfield but also a number of (talented) musicians who built the arrangements together.
While earlier albums Layers, In The Balance, and Look Up already sounded great, Diving In builds upon that. Here you can hear jazz-inspired chords, bluesy guitar sounds, and passionate vocals that give Hollyfield a impactful presence in the Americana landscape.
The songs feel human due to the choice of subjects. Themes such as love, loss, insecurity, aging, and the experience of trying to keep up in a world that seems to be constantly spinning at breakneck speed are explored.
A highlight of the album is We Are The People, which operates as a protest against division and advocates for a more hopeful future. For Emma also manages to impress me, as it was written for Hollyfield’s daughter. The very emotional tunes like Blindspot strike a chord quickly.
Hollyfield places great value on realism in Diving In. Don’t expect massive hooks, but rather someone who really has something to say. That alone calls for praise.
