Belgium singer-songwriter Noonzy returns with his new single, If I Were You, the latest cut from his forthcoming debut album, Plan Is Bad. The song explores identity and transformation, capturing the particular feeling of wanting to see the world. or yourself, through someone else’s eyes.
You can tell this one was labored over, in the best way. Noonzy has said the track went through a ridiculous number of shapes before settling into the soft, tropical-pop feel it has now. The whole thing is built around the chorus melody, and it shows, everything feels like it’s in service of that one hook.
I love what Nathan Pigott’s clarinet adds here. It doubles the chorus whistle line at first, then really opens up in the bridge with this long, stretched-out clarinet bed that just sits there and glows. It’s a genuinely magic moment, and it’s easy to hear why Noonzy still loves it every time it comes around.
If I Were You proves to be warm, patient, and satisfying all the way through. Check it out below!
