Marika Che is the solo project of Marika Justad, formerly the frontwoman of indie-rock band TANGERINE, who earned praise from outlets including NME, The Guardian, KEXP, and Stereogum. With her solo work, she takes a more personal approach to songwriting, utilizing her own experiences.
Bonfire of Tragedy is the first song Marika wrote for her album Bright Flame, shortly after her father passed away, when she felt lost and alone. Inspired by a vision of a huge bonfire drawing people together, it imagines a place where strangers can drink, dance, sing, share stories, and simply exist without judgment.
I love the arrangement here, which is acoustic without drums. The vocals sound comfortable, and you can immediately sense their realness.
